What to See !

Aphrodisias ruins covering an area of approximately 520 hectares is encircled by a wall in the length of 3.5 kilometers firstly founded in Delayed Roman Age, and repaired in Byzantium period. We can see that the old architectural parts were used for constructing and repairing the wall. To tell the truth, the city was founded on a plain area except the hill called Akropol hill in 15 meter high prehistorically.

Hadrianus Bath

It was exposed in 1904-1905 excavations made by Paul Gaudin. It has five gallery and palaestra (that is court with pool) and is magnificent building.
Some of the monuments and embossed designs are exhibited in Istanbul Archeological Museum.

Agora

It was a large area of 205 x 120 meters wide encircled by porticos in northwestern part of theatre hill. West portico close to Hadrianus Bath is called Tiberios Portico referring to Emperor Tiberios.

Stadium

The stadium built at the beginning of the empire period is one of the most magnificent buildings of Afrodisias.
It is neighbour to north wall of city.
Its length is 262 meters and width is 59 meters.
Its capacity was 30.000.
It is entered to the area using entrances with vault found at the ends in the east and west.
There was a kingdom lodge (not present here) in the middle of the long edge in the north.

Such as comedies, tragedies, flutes and harp playing, saying good words, war dance ete as well as sportive contests such as races, wrestling, panereas boxing, pentathlon ete. There were also contests arranged for messengers, drum players and sculptors. In the delayed Roman Age east end of the stadium was encircled with a wall and thus stadium was turned into a form where the fights of gladiators and wild animals were made.

Odeon

It was found in 1962 and opened. It is an amphitheatre in half circle. It could be used for listening music and for meeting of city council. Its stage and band were decorated with monuments and mosaics. It is understood that its roof and first rows were collapsed in an earthquake in antiquity.

Theatre Bath

A very beautiful building was revealed in the excavations made in south of theatre. There were small pools in absids and niches in a saloon with pool whose corners were made round, called theatre bath in that building. That bath, with a great probability, was constructed in VIth century A.D.

Aphrodisias Museum

The museum was built at the entrance of Aphrodisias Ruins.
The purpose of the museum to exhibit revealed works found only in Aphrodisias Ruins.
Antique Works General Directorate of the Ministry of Tourism and Culture started to build the building in 1971 and completed it in 1979.
It was opened to  Aphrodisias Museum that has the richest monument collection in Turkey's local museums  consists of a row of hail and a management office around a court.
The halls are separated in accordance with the subjects of the works exhibited.
Here are exhibited the portrait monuments of emperors, queens, princes and princesses and their directors in emperors hall.
Some samples that decorated the hall are the portrait monuments of emperor Trajan, Domitianus and Julius Caesar's older age period.
The second hall was called Melpomene hall because there is her monument here.
Additionally the monuments of museum  interested in Apollo and a monument supposed  Apollon with the same style were found in theatre excavations.
The bigger length monument of Flavius Palmatus, the Asia governor is one of the most beautiful parts of last hall.
In the passageway between that hall and emperors' hall it is Zoilos embossed design.
That embossed design aimed at exalting Zoilos  to helped a lot for improvement of Aphrodisias  in 1st century B.C. exhibits an art with the  best quality.
The third hall in the museum is called Odeon  hall.

Because the works exhibited here were found in the excavations made in Odeon.
Mostly they are the monuments of poets and philosophers. There are also monuments of boxers signed by Polynikes here.
Here are findings such as earthenware, small monuments and jewelleries and glass pots,

It is exhibited the monuments of satyr and athletes playing with child Dionysos in the hall where injured Amazon Queen Penthesilea was removed from Achilleus.

Wide Aphrodite hall is separated for monument of Aphrodite found in 1962, busts of Aphrodite and high ranking priests and nuns of Aphrodite  Temple.
