 "The Foot Sign" carved on the sidewalk in Ephesus

The main reason why this particular house was called love house is probably because of the Floor Mosaic that depict a Dionysian feast.

Another reason is a misrepresented figure that was found in the entrance hallway that belong to God Priapos. God Priapos (God Bes) is a depiction of a nude male with an emphasis on the male sexual organ. It is used for fertility and abundance for the household. Today this figure made of clay is exhibited in Ephesus Archaeology Museum in the town of Selcuk.
 The Foot Sign to 'the House of Pleasure'
One other indication to the House of Pleasure is the So Called "Advertisement" carved on the side walk pavement along the road from Marble Street to the Library of Celsus.
On this road sign, there is a Left Foot showing the direction to the Love House, and on the side of the Foot, there a Face of the Lady with a Crown along with a rectangular shape of item (referred as money) and on the top left there is a Heart Symbol. This composition is interpreted as If one follows the Foot shall get a chance to meet the Lady and make her feel like a Queen by showing some Love to her, as long as he has enough money to pay for it.
And the rumor tells that Right across the Love House, it was the famous Library of Celsus, beside it the Commercial Market.
And Typical Roman man would say to his wife "Honey, take my Roman Express card and go do your shopping while I'm in the Library enhancing my knowledge". But he uses the secret tunnel that leads from the Library to the Adult entertainment facility right across. |
